Track Cycling

Track racing has deep roots (first Worlds in 1895) and today showcases explosive power, speed and precision on the velodrome. Gauteng runs sprint, endurance and combined events under CyclingSA and UCI regulations.

Individual Sprint

Flying-200 m qualification, then short knockout heats. Tactics (even track stands) decide the final sprint.

Team Sprint

Men: three riders over three laps. Women: two riders over two laps. Each rider leads for a lap, then peels off. Finals decide podium places.

Kilometre / 500 m

Standing-start solo time trial. Fastest time wins (1 km for men, 500 m for women).

Keirin

Riders follow a pacing motorbike that increases speed before pulling off; a short, all-out sprint settles the result.

Team Pursuit

Two teams of four over 4 km. Win by catch or fastest time.

Points Race

Sprints every ten laps (on a 250 m track) plus lap gains/losses decide the final tally.

Madison

Two-rider teams relay through hand-slings; distance covered and sprint points determine the classification.

Scratch Race

First rider across the line wins (up to 24 riders; 15 km men, 10 km women).

FAQ

Do I need a special track bike?

Yes. A fixed-gear, single-speed bike with no brakes and plugged bar ends is required. Tyres must be slick and in good condition, and the bike must be safe with no protrusions. You’ll run one gear; quick-release levers aren’t allowed.

Which track events are run and how do they differ?

Sprint events (Sprint, Keirin, Team Sprint) are short, high-power match-ups with flying or standing starts; Keirin uses a pacing motor before the final laps. Endurance events (Individual/Team Pursuit, Scratch, Points, Elimination, Madison, Omnium) focus on sustained speed, tactics, and bunch skills.

Are aero bars permitted on the track?

Only in timed events such as Individual/Team Pursuit and the Kilo/500 m TT. Aero extensions are not allowed in bunch races (Scratch, Points, Elimination, Madison, Keirin) where standard drop bars are required.

What are the gear and category rules, especially for juniors?

Age and gender categories follow CSA/UCI groupings. Juniors race under rollout limits (a maximum development checked by commissaires before the start). Senior gear choice is generally open unless a specific event tech guide sets limits.

What safety and setup checks should I expect on race day?

Approved helmet on at all times when on the track, tight-fitting kit, visible race numbers (and transponder if used) mounted as instructed, and bikes passing pre-race inspection. Follow track-side signals, enter/exit safely at the designated points, and only receive assistance at the start (holder) when permitted.
